While vacationing in Scotland, we had a history lesson of how all the men in a village were very loyal to the clan (the reigning family of the region). These brave soldiers (or best men) would fight to their death to protect the clan leader. This sounds quite similar to the modern day groomsman, except for the killing part.

History states that the tradition of groomsmen originated in 200 BC with the Germanic Goths. We are lead to believe that at that time there was a shortage of women, so in order to get a bride of your own, you had to steal one from a neighboring village. This is where the best man, usually a brother or best friend would be of assistance. They would help you steal the bride and then stand at the alter with you (with sword ready) to fight off any unwelcome advances from the bride's family that might object.

Last weekend I was at a bridal show and I saw a lot of brides with their maids in tow. In a day and age where reality shows like Bridezilla only show the bad sides that brides can have, it was nice to see these brides sharing an event that should be fun and cherished.
